WHY ARE SOME LEADERS GREAT WITH THEIR PEOPLE (AND MANY AREN'T)?
In 35 years of being led and also observing leaders, including the lady CEO of an Edinburgh based investment company, Michael O'Neill with Northern Ireland and the Leinster Rugby leadership team, behavioural patterns of leadership are clearly evident.
All of these people are GREAT with their people. Now GREAT doesn't mean soft (or overly tough) it just means that they get a lot from their people, all of the time. Their people would willingly do anything for them and the results are incredible.
So how do they do it?
To a person, they apply the correct engagement strategy to the correct person at the correct time. They mentor AND they coach but as the situation requires.
So to mentor or to coach?
Aren't they actually the same thing?
If there really is a difference then what is the difference? (And does it really matter?)
It does matter. Coaching and mentoring are 2 ESSENTIAL leadership capabilities. Without them, you are a practitioner who has responsibility. With them, you are a long way towards being an EFFECTIVE leader.
The answer, they are very different and if you try and mentor someone when you should really be coaching them, you will turn them off. Equally if you try and coach someone when they really want to be mentored, you will frustrate them.
So use the correct approach at the correct time.
Sounds easy, and it is easy when you know HOW.
You will learn:
1. The balance between the MINDSET of your people and their SKILLS, and which one really matters
2. Your colleague has a 'challenge' - what really is their challenge? Establishing the root cause and how to use the root cause to define your approach
3. How to mentor without constantly TELLING people what to do. How to avoid expressions like 'If I was you...' 'We used to....' How to use better language for better engagement
4. The TGROW coaching model. How to use TGROW when you initiate the conversation. How to use TGROW when your people initiate a conversation
5. The 6 components of (real) active listening. How to develop true understanding, how to remain 'present'
6. The practical application of these capabilities. You will have an opportunity to practice using these capabilities in a real environment.
